Ataraxia

an ancient Greek philosophical term meaning a state of profound mental tranquility, untroubled calmness, and freedom from emotional distress or anxiety.

Based in Richmond, Virginia, Ataraxia is an instrumental progressive rock and progressive metal duo featuring Mason Good on bass and Elijah Bryant on drums. Their music fuses ambitious progressive songwriting, technical precision, and crushing heaviness into a dynamic instrumental sound that is unmistakably their own—bold, unpredictable, and relentlessly powerful.

Mason and Elijah have been writing and performing together for more than two years after first meeting at Bach to Rock in Midlothian, Virginia.

Mason began playing bass at age nine and has dedicated himself to continually refining his musicianship. After studying with several instructors, he is now mentored by professional bassist Bjorn Englen of Los Angeles.

Elijah began playing drums at [age] and has developed a precise, technical playing style through years of dedicated practice and instruction from several Richmond-area drum teachers.

Drawing from a wide range of influences and techniques, Mason and Elijah have forged a distinctive approach that serves as the driving force behind Ataraxia's powerful and evolving sound.

Before forming Ataraxia in January 2026, Mason and Elijah performed together in a previous band, playing venues throughout the Richmond area, including Another Round, Hardywood West Creek, Main Line Brewery, and Northside Grille. Since launching Ataraxia, they have focused on developing a distinctive musical identity, pushing the boundaries of instrumental progressive music with compositions that are equal parts creative, powerful, and uncompromising.
